Throwing Knife

Origin: Ngbaka-Mabo Tribe, Central African Republic/ Republic of Congo
Composition: forged iron, copper

This throwing knife is from the Ngbaka-Mabo tribe, which is a subgroup of the Gbaya, who live in the Central African Republic and the Republic of Congo. Designed to be effective in battle, it also serves as a symbol of prestige and as tradable currency for major transactions. It is also used in the ritual context to battle against sorcery (ref: Elsen, “De fer et de fierté”).

The 19th century photograph (left) depicts a Ngbaka-Mabo villager holding a throwing knife, and is © Jan Elsen.

This throwing knife is within a category of the most prized pieces in the collection of knives on this site. As many collectors are aware, the timeless form of this African knife is recognized, particularly throughout Europe, as one of the most brilliant and interesting forms in the world of tribal arms and weapons. The four perpendicular lines which cross the center of the blade are reminiscent of facial and body scarification which is prevalently displayed for prestige and initiation throughout the tribes which have historically employed these types of blades. This African knife is highly recommended for a buyer; it is sought-after for many reasons, and when put on a custom base and displayed in a home will be a treasured piece of sculpture for years to come.
