Kagulu/Makonde Figure
Origin: Dodoma, Tanzania
Composition: wood
Widely considered to be prolific carvers,
the Makonde’s work is often attributed to other carving
peoples in Tanzania, such as the Nyamwezi and Tsonga peoples.
This piece, however, is thought to be authentic Kagulu or
Makonde, with substantial evidence of age and a beautifully
sculpted form. It is within the tradition of standing female
figures throughout the Tanzania region thought to have supernatural
powers, able to bring health, healing, and prosperity if
employed for such purposes.
The eyes have holes where at one time seeds
or glass beads may have been placed, and the pierced holes
in the ears reflect a likely place where earrings adorned
the figure at one time. This valuable, collectible piece
undoubtedly passed through many hands before SUJARO acquired
it from an African dealer in 2006. It is among the 50 most
significant wooden pieces in the collection.
