Large Female Ancestor Figure with Purse and Staff

Origin: Bamum Tribe, Cameroon
Composition: lost wax-cast bronze

Perhaps the largest prestige piece from the Cameroon Grasslands ever to enter the United States, this is an extraordinary, impressive work of craft. The classic Bamum face, intricately detailed body scarification and accessories (handbag and cup) are an expression of power and mastery. It was likely the commissioned work of a ruling Fon, as a tribute to a current or past Bamum queen. It was sold to a SUJARO agent by the tribe in 2002.
