Ceremonial Stool with Figures of Ancestors or Deities
Origin: Bamum Tribe, Cameroon Grasslands
Composition: lost wax-cast bronze
This stool is representative of those made expressly for the chief or “Fon,” that was considered the sole possession of the chief until it was sold. Stools generally, and bronze pieces specifically, are associated with wealth and prestige. The figures are thought to be ancestors or past chiefs, to who the Fon would pay respect, and from whom he would seek guidance and protection. A very collectible piece. |
