Male Kifwebe Mask Kilume
Origin: Songye Tribe, D.R. Congo
Composition: wood, pigment dyes
As most African art collectors are aware,
modern artists (Picasso, for example) have
been heavily influenced by particular styles of
African masks; the Songye mask is one of
these influential pieces. This Songye tribe
mask is based upon historical Bukishi
association Kifwebe (singular) and Bifwebe (plural) masks, through which Songye life is
regulated. Male masks are known for their
stylized form and a crest atop the head. The
powerful crests and projecting mouths with
bold, geometric shapes are deemed to
embody the great strength of the mask. The
carved masks of elders embody the greatest
strength. The dynamic forms symbolize the
level of power, or grade of the masked figure.
Bought from the tribe in the Congo in late
2006. |
