Bird Bush Spirit Mask with Figure Representing
an Ancestor or Spirit
Origin: Bwa Peoples,
Burkina Faso
Composition: wood, pigment stain
This mask, representing an abstract bird with
an ancestor or deity/spirit atop the piece, was carved from
a single piece of hardwood by the Bwa in Burkina Faso and
brought to the United States in 2002.
Similar to the Bobo and Nuna peoples, the
Bwa live in the dry savannah land of central Burkina Faso.
Like other tribal communities in this area, the Bwa and
Nuna seek the help of powerful bush spirits who live in
the wild forests, bush country, and rivers surrounding their
villages. Wishing to control these forces and enlist their
help against the powers of destruction, the Bwa create masks
that make the spirits visible and put them in touch with
the people.
Bwa animal spirit masks depict the nature
spirits associated with such powerful animals as the buffalo,
hawk, crocodile, and different types of birds, one of which
is represented in this extraordinary mask. Different masks
are owned by families and clans who enlist the bush spirits
to help and protect them.
Est. mid-late 20th century. Excellent collector’s
piece. The piece weighs approximately 40 pounds, and has been
custom-mounted for display and preservation. The base is included
with the piece. It is a very strong functional work of art
and can become a showpiece in a beautiful home or business
environment.
